Coverage types vary from policy to policy and the only way to know if personal items are covered is to check your particular policy. Read your policy and if it doesn't cover personal items and you usually carry them, look for a policy that will offer that protection.

If it's not an item attached to the vehicle (such as stereo, amps, subwoofers that have been screwed into floor boards) they are likely not. However, your homeowners insurance likely does cover these items

Generally, depending on the state in which your insurance policy was written, personal items are covered under your property insurance policy.. ie homeowners or renters insurance. You will need to read the exclusions section of your policy where it deals with personal belongings, and also the covered perils associated with your policy.

Depending on your policy form and state of residence, some personal items may be covered in an auto theft claim if you carry comprehensive coverage and any items claimed are over your deductible amount. Typically, however, most personal items should be covered and insured under a property policy.
