Are expensive houses worth it in the long run?

It depends. If it is expensive because it is new you could save on maintaining it. If it is expensive simply because it is large the upkeep could be a lot and may not be worth it.

Expensive houses are only worth the upkeep if you can afford to properly maintain the home. As house prices have fallen, it is now a good time to buy a home. The bigger the investment, the bigger the payoff will be. However, if the home is not maintained, you may not recover your investment.

If you have the financial resources they are worth it. Yard care alone will cost a great deal over the life of the house. Then factor in paint and other materials to fix up the house. Smaller houses are much more easily kept up than bigger houses but the look and the feel of the bigger homes is nice.

The choice to buy an expensive house is probably more complicated than a simple investment choice. It's also a lifestyle choice.
