Are enlarged tonsils a problem?

Whether they are enlarged or not, if they are causing you discomfort only then is it a problem. If they do happen to cause irritation in you throat go ahead and make a visit to the doctor. It isn't a painful procedure to undergo; you can followup with nice ice-cream.

If they are tender, sore or feel itchy and make swallowing difficult, then yes. Otherwise, not usually. Tonsils are part of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. Their swelling usually indicates in increase in immune system response, but doesn't necessarily mean you are or about to get sick.

yes depending upon age and some reasons it may cause breathing problems, no oral intake, severe nausea/vomiting, or serious co-existing illnesses. These problems may arise. a person who have these problems due to the enlarged tonsils better to consult a doctor. if these are absent then no problem due to enlarged tonsil
