The battle of Armageddon will commence when Christ returns to Earth and defeats the Antichrist, or "Beast. " Afterward, Satan will be imprisoned in the abyss, or bottomless pit, for 100 years.
At the end of this era or dispensation. The anti-christ comes on earth to rule and reign in place of christ. He takes control of earth and many side with him. He will join the whole world together as one. Those that opose him/ or resist him will be confronted then at Armageddon.
