Redness and pus in the belly button area is usually associated with a irritant. This can be caused, for example, by "picking" at the area with one's finger. Alternatively, a belt, or belt buckle can rub the area and cause the redness and/or pus.

THis could be a hernia if its large and painful. If its not it can be something as simple as an ingrown hair. Investigate, see if you can see anything within the sore, apply some alcohol or other tincture that can pull infection out if its not better in a week get it checked.

If the pus is white pierce it and it will heal. If the pus is green or brown and smells, piercing is painful, use antibiotic and consult a doctor.

You probably have some kind of mild infection. This could be caused by many different things. Perhaps you scratched it unknowingly with your hand or a piece of clothing. Since it's rather hard to make sure it's clean, the infection got in. Try using a soap like dial to clean it out.
