B12 deficit is usually caused by inadequate diet though there are some cases of impaired absorption. Vegan diets often lack B12 as it is derived from animal sources.

When one is low in consuming animal foods, one can be be low in this vitamin. Inadequate consumption of dairy products, chicken eggs, and animal meat can cause a deficiency of vitamin B12.

It is caused by poor absorption, not lack of B12. A standard American diet includes more than enough B12 in diet but it is very poorly absorbed. Antibiotics, frozen foods and junk foods causes malabsorption of B12. Removing the factors that hinder absorption is more important than getting supplements. Though you might need B12 shots if it's very low.

It has to do with the food you eat. Your diet must lack vital greens and iron rich foods, that is why you have b12 deficit
