Struts generally refer to structural components. They are used to limit compression as much as possible so that the force normal operations push upon parts do not break under the stress. In a car, it most commonly would be the MacPherson strut, which is connected to the car's body and wheels as shock absorbers.

Struts are the for the front end of just about every front wheel drive vehicle. A strut will serve multiple purposes, once placed in the car it will be able to use the spring to support the weight on any vehicle. The housing also serves as a structural part of the suspension system.
