In theory there are three different leadership styles. The autocratic leader makes all decisions alone. (eg military commander) A participative leader talks to his subordinates first and therefore lets them participate when deciding about something. A Laissez-Faire leader gives full freedom and doesn't interfere until there is problem and an urgent need to get involved.

My current manager is very cool. She practices a laze faire way of supervising. She is also good at telling other people what to do which is a delegative way of managing. Some of us want a manager that uses paternalistic style.

Authoritarian leaders perform in a dictatorial, top-down fashion and give no room for workers to make input. Permissive leaders cater almost entirely to worker preferences. Laissez-faire leaders stand aside and fail to take action. Some mix of authoritarian and permissive styles may be best - authoritative.
