Why shouldn't I use a rewritable disc?

Are they unreliable?

The only problem with a rewritable disc is the fact that it could be erased and if your content is something that you want permanently, then you shouldn't use one.

Historically CDRW provide far less reliability. Many of the underlining issues have been solved but there are still are legitimate issues. However neither CDRW or CDR should be used to store important data long term, even if the data was verified as written if will be eventually become unreadable.
