Why is my new grass so thin?

There could be several reasons for it. You have a branch covering the lawn portion where the grass is grown, the soil has too much of rock in it,the fertilizer you use is not compatible to the variety of grass, or may be you watered too much.

New grass can be thin for several reasons: the grass hasn't grown a good root system yet; or it is growing in shade and not getting enough sun.

if it was an area that has had alot of traffic (around new contruction) it will be harder to get a good stand. also weather and how much soil to seed contact there was will determine how much will come up. seed new grass, aerate, and water
