Water and ice water are the same element-H2O. It is the temperature of the ice water that can be harmful-4 degrees Celcius-and even then only if your body temperature is elevated. The sudden change in temperature could cause muscle cramping. Energy must be expended to raise the water temp-only relevant in freezing conditions (hypothermia).

Ice water can cause your internal temperature to fluctuate in unpleasant ways - it can even cause your internal temperature to go up to compensate for the cold.

Water with ice is considered less desirable than room water because it takes energy from your body to warm it and digest it. This can slow down re-hydration. In rare cases, the water is so cold it causes tissue damage.
