In 1907, Alabama was playing heavily favored Auburn in the Iron Bowl. In spite of playing in thick red mud, Alabama was able to tie the game 6-6. When Hugh Roberts, then sports editor of the Birmingham-Age Herald, wrote the story, he referred to Alabama as the Crimson Tide.

The University of Alabama got their nickname "the Crimson Tide" during a football game called the Iron Bowl. The Iron Bowl is a yearly tradition played between the University of Alabama and in state rivals, the Auburn University Tigers. The game was being played on a muddy field. Auburn was favored to win, but Alabama held them to a tie.

The team was originally known as the "Crimson White" after the school colors. By some accounts, the name "Crimson Tide" originated with sportscaster Hugh Roberts. He used that phrase to describe the team during a tough game played in red mud back in 1907. The hard-fought game ended in a tie.
