The dog could be doing it for a number of reasons it may be a bit hyper or it could be the kind of dog that is uneasy with anything new and different including sounds and smells they will hear and smell things we do no even know are there.

One theory as to why these shepherds bark a lot is because they are meant as working dogs. When they get bored or don't get enough attention or exercise, they tend to bark. Try to give your dog an extra walk or extra alone time with you and the problem will probably go away.

One reason that your Australian Shepherd barks a lot is due to it's breed. This is a herding dog and barking was a important tool used in performing their herding duties. As with all dogs the instincts that are part of their breed can be corrected by training. A low voltage shock collar works well for barking.

I'm sorry decomom, but the use of a shock collar only shows how little you actually know about dog training. People who use shock collars for training just don't care about spending the necessary time with real, lasting training methods. Please don't use shock collars and instead use positive reinforcement.  add a comment

This breed of dog for centuries were used to heard. They could be barking because they have pent up energy. Train the dog to do a task or various tricks. This should help with the barking problem.

Generally quiet, Australian Shepherds are known to become big barkers if they don't get enough exercise and mental stimulation. These dogs need more than a daily walk to keep up with a very agile brain and a body built for work. Give your dog a job to do, work on training daily, and make sure to provide loads of exercise.

Australian Shepherds were bred for herding (as the name suggests). The method the dogs used to rein the animals in who are going astray is barking.

Aussies are protective herding dogs. They think their bonded family is their sheep so they either bark to warn them of stranger danger approaching or, if one of their sheep is straying they will bark to get them back in the circle. It is the character of the breed.
