Why does a scrapbook need to be lignin-free?

I understand the need for acid-free.

While not acidic, lignin (the natural binding agent that holds wood fibers together) can do the same damage to your pictures as acid. Fortunately, lignin can be removed without compromising the paper's strength, so going both acid and lignin free is the best way to preserve your memories.

Lignin is a substance that binds wood fibers together in paper. Lignin needs to be removed during the pulp making process before paper is pressed. If lignin is removed during pulping process then the paper is lignin free. Actually, not all paper is lignin free as stated, all paper has at least 1% of lignin in it.
