Why does a cat become vocal at night?

If illness has been ruled out, this sometimes stems from loneliness. Cats are nocturnal, and vocalize to get their owners' attention, not understanding that for us, it's time to sleep.

Cats tend to be night owls, so they often decide to "talk" more at night. If the cat isn't spayed or neutered it will be much more vocal because it is looking to breed.
