Eustachian tubes equalize air pressure inside and outside the eardrum. Fluid behind the ears usually is caused by blocked eustachian tubes. When they are blocked, negative air pressure occurs behind the eardrum. A vacuum cannot exist in the body, so the cells in the ear secrete fluid to fill it.

The fluid behind your ears is there to help give you balance. If you lean to the left the fluid will move accordingly and your brain can interpret that movement. Without the fluid you would lose all sense of balance. Dizziness is caused when the fluid is still moving after you have stopped moving.

Probably because of an infection. To clear up the infection your body will get fluids to the infected site, if it is infected it should also hurt and be warm.

1. The fluid could be the result of fluid that landed in the ears, either from swimming, submersion under water, or even water from the shower. 2. You could have had head congestion and mucus got into the ears through the Eustachian tubes.
