Ocean water has to be very warm for hurricanes to occur. This warm water is found near the equator in the Atlantic Ocean but not so much in the Pacific.
The Atlantic is warmer because the water current comes from warmer southern climates. The Pacific is cooler because of an arctic water current. Warmed water=warm,humid air producing more hurricanes.
