There are a few different theories about why cats purr. One likely reason is communication with each other. As to why cats purr when they are under stress, people think purring might be a cats version of a "mantra". Purring might also have healing properties.

Cats purr for a variety of reasons. One theory is that is like saying a mantra. In other words like saying "ooooom" over and over to relax. Purring might even release endorphins to reduce pain.

As a method of communicating contentment; possibly also expressing submissiveness when frightened or threatened to show that they are not going to attack, and also when in labor or ill as a way to reassure themselves. Soft purring instead of loud meowing may protect kittens in the wild from the attentions of predators.
