Yes, Hawaiian shirts were invented in Hawaii and were originally called 'Aloha shirts'. The first Hawaiian shirts appeared in the 1930s and were designed by a tailor in Waikiki. They are a happy medium between casual and formal wear in Hawaii, because normal long sleeved suits and shirts would be too hot and stuffy for the climate.

"Hawaiian" shirts were named after the fact that they originated from Hawaii. In Hawaii, they are also called an "Ahola" shirt.
