Why are the colors of the US flag red, white, and blue?

The Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 defined the colors in terms of the US official seal. The stripes where to be white (to signify purity and innocence) and red (to signify hardiness and valor). The blue of the union signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The white in the flag stands for our innocence and purity. The color red is for hardiness and courage. The blue color in the flag is for perserverance and determination.
