Answer by  John (9008)

The American coin that is worth five cents is commonly called a "nickel" because that is the metal used to make it. Nickel is fairly valuable, but not as much so as gold or silver. Most American coins are made of metal that has some value. Pennies are mostly coopper, for example, and dimes are mostly silver.

The 5-cent coins are called nickels because of the metal used in minting coin. The metal used is a nickel-copper alloy.
