Jesus' disciple Peter was the first recognized leader of the church. Peter traveled to Rome and was martyred. His followers and successors evolved into the (Roman) Catholic Church.

The earliest beginnings of the Catholic Church are believed to have their roots with Christ's original disciples, with Saint Peter as its first leader. They spread Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. It wasn't until centuries later, during the Reformation, that shifts in theological and political thinking brought the development of other religious groups such as Lutherans, Methodists, and Presbyterians.
