Tommie Smith won a gold medal in the 1968 Summer Olympics for the 200 meter dash. He was the first person to break the 20 second barrier in this event with a time of 19.83 seconds. During the medal receiving ceremony Smith and fellow medal winner John Carlos gave the Black Power Salute.

Tommie Smith, a male, won a gold medal in 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City. He won it for the 200 meter dash (track and field). He also played football with the Cincinnati Bengals (circa 1969-1972). After his athletic career ended, he went on to teach and coach at colleges.
