T-mobile has an excellent pay as you go plan if you need it for emergencies, $100 for one year gets you 1000 minutes.

I have actually really loved the Net10 pre-paid plan. For $30 you get 300 minutes. Only downside is that your minutes will only last you 30 to 60 days and you have to buy more to keep your phone number and minutes. As well as if you have 5 minutes left you can only make 911 calls.
