From ancient times the Latin poet Ovid is famous for his odes. In modern times famous poets are Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, T.S. Eliot, Edward Arlington Robinson, Allen Ginsberg, Nikki Giovanni. Rainier Maria Rilke and Gottfried Benn are famous German poets. In France names which come to mind are: Mallarme and Rimbaud as well as Verlaine.

Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Edgar Allan Poe, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Langston Hughes are all classic poets, and, more recently, Maya Angelou and the lovable Dr. Seuss.

The most famous poet of all time, and who will quite likely always remain the most famous poet the world has ever seen, is undoubtedly the late Edgar Allen Poe. Beyond Poe, some of the more famous poets to ever live were Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Stephen Crane, Lanston Hughes, and Shel Silverstein.
