A quick list would include Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Ann Sexton, and I would also say Sharon Olds. There is a great anthology out there called "Ain't I a Woman."

In terms of popularity: Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Edna St Vincent Millay, Elizabeth Bishop, Alice Walker, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Christina Rossetti, Adrienne Rich and Margaret Atwood. Keep in mind that a list like this is highly subjective.

Maya Angelou is a famous current-day writer of color. Elizabeth Bishop was a lesbian female writer though she did not want her work judged on her gender or sexual orientation. Sylvia Plath, like Elizabeth Bishop, is taught in many college level English courses. Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a Victorian-era poet who wrote feminist works that criticized Victorian psychiatry.

There are many famous feminist authors and poets. Two of the most famous feminist poets from America are Emily Dickenson and Sylvia Plath. Both women lived lives that were "unconventional"--Dickenson was unmarried her whole life, and Plath went through several marriages. Their poems are both filled with feminist ideals, some of which seem before their time.
