Which is better: running a whole house fan or central air?

Central air gets the house cooler but it is also more expensive. If where you live is not constantly horribly hot all summer, a whole house fan may be a better option. The best option might be whole house fan plus selected room air conditioners.

Whole house fans are inexpensive to run but it must be cool outside to cool the house. Central air cools the house when it's hot outside but expensive to run.
