The orchid plant that produces vanilla beans is native, originally, to Mexico. However, like many things that returned from the "New World", Vanilla Beans now grow on plantations from Madagascar to Portugal to China. Growing Vanilla Beans in the United States is not impossible but not cost effective, as it is a deeply labor intensive process.

Vanilla beans come from Orchids and are native to Mexico. They are a tropical plant and are the fruit of the Orchid. They can be grown at home, but must be in diffused light, and need to be pollinated, either by bees or by hand, to produce vanilla beans.

Orchids grown in the Southern Hemisphere, where there is plenty of sunlight and high humidity bear vanilla beans. Wild orchids grow as vines attached to a host plant. The average required rainfall for vanilla bean plants is 80' and they prefer a climate between 21ºC and 30ºC.
