Where can you go to conduct a property history search?

I am thinking about buying a building for my new business and I want to know what else was in that building.

The best source of information for a property search is the city or town where the property is located. Every municipality has a central point where these records are maintained. This is usually the city hall, county courthouse, or another city or county department. In today's digital world many counties, cities and towns maintain records online.

Speak to the real estate agent, current owner or leasing agent about what other businesses were located in the building. You may be able to determine what businesses were located at that address through the Department of Revenue (through the state or the local jurisdiction), but "property history search" will reveal past owners, not necessarily former occupants.

The titles office is a good place to start as you can look up a vast number of addresses on the computer.

The county courthouse in the jurisdiction where the subject property is located should contain records pertaining to the history of the specific property. Alternatively, a title company may assist you.
