If your boyfriend likes books go to a chain bookstore like Barnes and Noble and ask the salesperson. They are trained to help you choose something he would like. Or, if he likes sports, go to a sporting goods store and talk with a salesperson there and they will be able to help you choose.

If he's into sport maybe get him tickets to see his favorite team. Maybe concert tickets to see his favorite band, or get him their latest cd.
