The Jim Crow era lasted from the end of the federal government's policy of Reconstruction in 1877 until the middle of the 1960s. It referred to racial segregation laws in the South. "Jim Crow" originated from a black face stage show that first appeared in 1828 and the term denoted a negative stereotype of African Americans.

The Jim Crow era was when the Jim Crow laws were in effect. This was from 1876 until 1965. These laws were established after the end of slavery to keep black people enslaved--legally.
