The Bombing of Guernica happened on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Germany and Italy supported the Fascist Spanish forces fighting to overthrow the Leftist Republican Government, supported by the Soviet Union. Late that afternoon, German planes bombed the town. At his trial, Hermann Goering admitted that the Spanish War was his opportunity to train pilots for WWII.
