Starting fluid is used on charcoal for grilling food.It should be burnt off completely before placing food on the grill. It should not be applied during cooking as it is a used as combustible fuel to light up charcoal briquettes that are being prepared for grilling. Fluid is squirted on the charcoal and lit up using a long match stick.

You should use starting fluid when you are in a hurry, or when conditions are too damp to start a fire with newspaper.

You need starting fluid to get that charcoal glowing, and that is what it is for. Use it as you need new hot areas. But don't set any food to cook on coals that have been "started" in the last 5 min, or that food will taste of petrol.
