A puppy should get his or her first shot at six to eight weeks old. Before this, a puppy is protected from disease by antibodies gotten in nursing. The first shot is usually the five-in-one, which protects your pet against many serious diseases.

As a general rule puppies should get their first shots when they are between three and six months of age. It is recommended to get the advice of your vet when determining shot schedule as all puppies are not created equal.

When the puppy is less than a month, but older than a few weeks it should get shots. You can wait longer, but you probably should not or else you risk the puppy getting sick.
