An AC unit should receive new freon at least once every 2 or so years, regular maintenance includes this most of the time.

When you notice that the units seems to run longer than it used to is the simple answer. YOu can see ice build up around the evaporator and hoses sometimes. The evaporator is the part in the furnace ducting. The only true way is to hook up some guages.

If high side and low side lines freeze or the lack of cold air is present, an air conditioning may need freon. To determine if freon is needed, put your hand above the condensor fan. If it is blowing cold air, refrigerant is low. Also, the suction line should be very cold to the touch.
