A good solid or liquid experiment which is especially good when trying to explain chemistry to a young child is as simple as filling up an ice tray with water and placing it in the freezer for a few hours or filling a pan with water and heating it to a boil.

If a nice thermometer is available, a good experiment is to mix varying quantities of salt in water and document how it changes the freezing temperature.
