When I was young we used to call them spider apples, but they are actually called hedge balls, and you can find them at local farmer's markets when they are in season. Also can be found at some parks, as they grow on trees.

Get a chicken not kidding they eat them and keep them away. Spiders also do not like the scent of bayberry. Bayberry candles work.
