When you say the engine is locking up, do you mean that it will just stop moving for you? You should have your transmission checked, as this can sometimes cause what it seems you are saying.
First check oil. The carburetor float may be leaking gas into the cylinder. Again check the oil to see if its overfull or smells like gas. May have a broken rod. May have a broken valve.
The blade may be jammed up with something. Check that first then check to see if the spark plugs are in good working order and are still firing. Make sure the oil is at the correct levels also.
There can be many different causes. Overheating, running without oil or to little oil, a broken piston rod, a cracked or broken piston and broken rings are just a few.
Did you forget to put oil in it? That's the major cause of engine seizures. If it's not frozen, just dying, you might check to make sure the air intake isn't fouled with grass clippings.
