It is improper to ask for any type of gift on an invitation. If there is a contact person on the invitation, they can inform guests instead.

I would write, "In lieu of registering gift preferences, the [bride, birthday guy, anniversary couple... ] notes their enjoyment of gift certificates. " or "Since {the couple, birthday guy, etc. ]will be moving, gift givers are encouraged to choose gift certificates. "
