Women wore long buttoned up dresses with a collar sometimes with a cape and men would wear a tailored vest under a waistcoat with knee trousers or button fly trousers.

The clothes of the 1800s were very conservative and very bulky. Think long, bo-peep skirts and petticoats for women and long, tapered jackets for men.

There was mainly 3 styles of female clothing in the 1800s. In the early years Empire Style clothes (under the breast waistline) were popular, during the mid 1800s a hips enhancement called "panier" was used to creater wider skirts (like princess Sissi's) and in the late 1800s tornures were used to give volume to back of the skirt
