Family relationships in the English colonies were very tight-knit and close, with good reason. They had to survive in harsh, new climatic conditions, interact and develop practical relationships with aboriginal tribes with strange cultural mores. Having to deal with circumstances like these, families had to, by necessity, depend on each other.

In the English colonies in America, women played a central role in the household, cooking, growing vegetables and educating children. Children had little "childhood" as they were expected to help around the house and farm. Few of them attended school. Families often lived in extended family groups as well.
