The population of USSR was at its peak right before the break up of the USSR in 1990. The population was 148,689,000. There was little change in population actual existence right after the break up but the number reduces drastically because the country was split up any many area's declared independence.

The presidents of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus signed the Belavezha Accords on December 8, 1991, thus causing the dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which had existed since 1922. The Commonwealth of Independent States was the replacement. The estimated population of the USSR in 1991 was 293,047,571 persons.

The total population of the USSR when it dissolved was approximately 290 million people. This includes population of Russia proper as well as other fourteen republics - members of the union.

It was about 290 million. The people were mostly Russian, but this included many different ethnic groups in the areas the Soviet Union controlled outside of present-day Russia. In comparison, Russia's population today is about 142 million, so you can see how many people in the USSR were not actually Russian.
