What was the main cause in the down turn of popularity in roller skating rinks?

When I was growing up they had roller skating rinks all over the place and now you do not see them that much.

The popularity in roller skating rinks is just a matter of changing cultural tastes. There are many factors, such as the rising popularity in indoor activities like video games.

The phenomena of roller skating was closely linked a musical style called/ funk. When funk lost its popularity the subculture around skating disappeared.

Inline skating became more popular, and these skates are usable across a broader range of terrains. The original skates could only be used on very flat surfaces, which most people didn't have access to except at rinks. With inline skates, the sidewalk is fine.

Young people these days have a lot more choices for recreation than any other generation before. They go to the mall, congegrate online or do gaming.
