Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado became a national park in September 2004. The 85,000-acre park stretching across Alamosa and Saguache counties includes the tallest sand dunes on the North American continent as well as mountains, ancient forests, alpine lakes and tundra. Six mountains in the park peak at over 13,000 feet.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was created by an act of the United States Congress on September 13, 2004. It is located in the eastern parts of Alamosa County and Saguache County, Colorado. It was once part of a National Monument of the same name but was accorded Park status in 2004.

The U. S. National Park system includes a variety of monuments, historic sites, and preserves. The Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park in Virginia was authorized on December 19, 2002 as the most-recent element of the system. The most recent National Park per se was the National Park of American Samoa, authorized October 31, 1988.
