What was the form of government in ancient Greece?

In ancient Greece, each city state (polis) was its own entity and thus had their own versions of government. Generally speaking, each city state would have a leader (often times a king) that would make the decisions and act as the arbitrator of justice. The leadership role was often inherited, except in special cases like Athens that had some democracy.

In Athens, there was a democracy that equally valued all citizen males. In Sparta, it was a strict caste system, in which the Spartans were the elite warrior / ruling caste and even other Greeks were slaves.

Because Greece was made up of city-states such as Athens and Sparta, Greece actually had many different forms of government. However, when hearing about ancient Greece you probably have most heard about the Athenians, as they are known as the first democracy. Before Athenia, however, many of the Greek city-states were actually monarchies.

Greece was the first nation to use democracy as a form of government. Democracy is used today in the United States.
