Introduced in 1954, the RCA CT-100 was the first mass-market color television produced in the United States. Although there were earlier mechanical and electronic efforts, none resulted in a viable commercial product. The 1950's-era color sets were extremely expensive (around $6,500 in 2010 dollars) and sold poorly.

John Logie Baird developed the first electromechanical television in 1928 using scanning discs at the transmitting and receiving ends with three spirals of apertures, one for each primary color. RCA developed the first all electronic color TV with no moving parts in 1947. In 1954 RCA started producing color tv's meeting FCC's standards.
