There are several units of currency mentioned in the Bible. The mite was a coin of very small value. The shekel was mentioned in the old testament and was the common currency for the time. A talent was a very large amount of money.

The biblical currency used to be called shekels (Biblical currency) at the holy places like temples. A shekel being twenty ge'rahs. 1/2 shekel valued at about 37 cents.

The main source of currency in biblical times was the shekel. In truth a 'shekel' was actually a weight, not something distinguishable like a quarter, dime, nickel or penny, so the shekel was valued a weight instead of our current system of money. So when bartering if the price was 20 shekel it didn't mean x amount of dollars.
