You can always be safe with a classic black dress with some beautiful heels (for a woman). Make sure to have a shawl or nice cardigan in case it is cold.

Wear something formal and comfortable. For men, wear a suit with heavy overcoat. For women, wear a formal dress, stockings, and have a warm jacket.

If it were me, I would wear a brown suit. I also would wear a brown coat. This way I stay warm. I also will look nice, and not clash with anything. I may even add in a brownish scarf. This way I look elegant, and stay warm when outside.

A nice compromise between a super short dress and a for length gownis choose a dress that you can wear leggings or tights under. Colour-wise, don't go with lighter pastels. Winter colours are darker, so if you're in a baby blue, you'll look rather close to the bridge if she's in white. Biggest suggestion: Wear a warm (nice) coat.
