What should I know about donating to a tax-exempt church?

You will be able to claim this amount as a donation. If possible get a receipt to prove the dollar amount donated. If you are donating an item (clothes, etc) a receipt is also helpful in the event that your taxes get audited.

In order to use your donations to your church for charitable contributions, you must have a receipt from that church for cash donations. If you give non-cash items, such as used clothing or furniture, you must get a receipt for their fair market value (typically the cost of such items at a thrift store). You'll need church's name, address, phone.

It results a tax deduction equal to the tax rate times the amount owed. For example, $1000 donated at 25% income tax = 250 tax deduction.
