First review your local state law, in many states baiting or feeding deer is a criminal offense which can get you into hot water with the local DNR. The best way to feed is to plant trees, the bear fruit apples, peaches, cherries, oaks (acrorns), the second best way is to plant a garden and let them have it.

Deer are not picky animals. If it is a timed feeder make sure that the storage container is very secure, they will break in if possible.

The feeder has to have a lid to keep the feed dry. Also, important to have a one way flap to keep small animals from getting into the feeder.
